We've Got Local Honey, Honey

You may have seen the Fox6 news story that aired on March 23rd about the benefits of local honey. If not, here's the scoop. A member of the Fox6 marketing staff takes a spoonful of honey each morning and has been able to stop taking allergy medicine. He starts around March 1st each year.

As the news story explained, since bees pick up pollen as they fly around, it naturally gets passed into honey and those who eat it are exposed to low amounts of the allergens. To fight allergies, however, it is important to eat locally produced honey, which contains local pollens.

Dr. James McMinn, a wellness doctor in Birmingham, said research shows that a dose of honey is similar to getting a flu shot. Given a small dose of honey, the body is exposed to a low amount of the allergens. The immunity builds up over time so that when bushes, trees, and flowers bloom, the body is ready for it. For some, this is a natural, inexpensive way to stay healthy.

Sometimes, what may appear to be bad news is really a segway to something better. AlabamaGoods experienced that recently. Up until the last week in December, we had been leasing space in The General Store at the Pepper Place. We loved having a retail destination where people could shop for their favorite Alabama made items. When we received the news that The General Store was closing, we knew we had to find another retail home quickly. We wanted a location in a quaint, established area that attracted shoppers who would appreciate the handcrafted products we sell. We found the perfect spot! If you've shopped in Birmingham, you're probably familiar with 18th Street in Homewood. We think it is the most interesting shopping destination in Birmingham. Our new retail home is in the strip where At Home and Harmony Landing are located. There is a lot of work to do to the space. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be working hard to transform the spot. We'll show pictures of our progress and the fun we're having getting the store ready.

August was an inferno in Alabama. The hot, still air is like the uncomfortable blast of heat you feel when you open the oven door. It was the perfect time to go on vacation to Idaho and Montana. I flew out with friends to meet the kind souls who trailered our dirt bikes to Pocatello. I rode 1800 miles in 9 days on single track, double track, dirt roads, farm roads, open desert and Massacre Mountain (for those who were there, no explanation is necessary... for those who were not, no explanation is possible). I used to work for a large company that employed many administrative assistants. I remember Administrative Professional’s Week (it was called Secretary’s Week then) being a big deal. Some managers took advantage of the occasion to give special attention to those who assisted them. They knew their lives would be much harder without them. They also knew they received the glory when their behind-the-scenes’ assistants performed their jobs well. So, they did special things for them during Administrative Professional’s Week and felt good about it. Other managers forgot, or didn’t think it was important. If they were to ask their assistants if Administrative Professional’s Week mattered to them, the assistant would wave it off like it was no big deal. But, how could it not matter, when just an office away, another assistant was being showered with well-deserved attention? There are so many easy ways that a manager can show appreciation, there’s no reason not to.

They are filming the action movie Red starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malcovich, Mary Louse Parker, Julian McMahon, and Richard Dreyfuss. In one of the scenes, some of the characters are racing through a train station set in Mobile. The train station will have kiosks that they run by. The production company approached us because they wanted a kiosk filled with authentic Alabama made items. They came to the right source!
